OEPA Wants to Hear from You

The Ohio EPA is seeking early stakeholder outreach (ESO) concerning Operator Certification for the Public Water Systems and Wastewater Treatment Works Five Year Rule Review. This is your opportunity to share your feedback concerning OAC Chapter 3745-7. Early stakeholder feedback is important as this way it can be considered BEFORE the rule language is developed by the Agency.

The changes being considered include:

  • Adding a provision to allow treatment facilities for secondary disinfection to reduce minimum staffing time by demonstrating automation and continuous monitoring

  • Alternatives for calculating populations at small systems (less than 250)

  • Alternatives to appropriately define the classification of satellite sewerage systems in OAC Rule 3745-7-04

  • Removal of references to rules that have been rescinded and removal of dates no longer pertinent to compliance

  • Minor language corrections to improve clarity and continuity and eliminate redundancy throughout the chapter.

You can provide your input concerning these specific changes and also any other portion of OAC Chapter 3745-7 you would like to provide feedback on.

Please click HERE for further explanation, including the most current draft and proposed rules, and the address to send your comments to.

Comments will be accepted through close of business January 30. This is important and can directly affect your facility so please take the time to provide input.

Carus LLC Chemical Plant Fire Could Impact Chemical Supplies

A large fire occurred at a chemical plant operated by Carus LLC in LaSalle, LaSalle County, Illinois on January 11. The plant manufactures water treatment and pollution control chemicals, including permanganates and possibly phosphates, polymers and catalysts.

If you use this facility or believe your supplier does you should investigate whether the chemical supply at your treatment plant will be impacted due to this plant being destroyed during the incident and consider lining up other chemical sources to avoid chemical shortages for their treatment processes. The EPA’s chemical locator tool can help locate suppliers.
