Join OWEA at Yellow Springs Brewery for Imagine a Day Without Water OWEA is proud to be part of Yellow Springs Brewery’s Imagine a Day Without Water event on Thursday, October 20 from 5-8 pm at the Yellow Springs Brewery Barrel Room in Yellow Springs, Ohio. In addition to OWEA; OAWWA, the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, and the Little Miami Conversancy will be represented. There will be food and drink available, so consider coming out. Remember no water, no beer! WEF Welcomes Two New Ohio Fellows OWEA is proud that two of our long-time members and former presidents are now two of the newest WEF Fellows. Both Deb Houdeshell and Kim Furry joined twelve other members to make up the 2022 class of WEF Fellows. This prestigious designation recognizes exemplary contributions to the WEF community and significant professional achievements and stature. Deb is the Water Reclamation Facility Superintendent for the City of Canton and Kim is the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager for the City of Lima. Congratulations Kim and Deb! Ohio is Well Represented at WEF Ops Challenge The Lake Erie Sludge Dawgs and Combined Sewers represented Ohio well at the WEF Operations Challenge during WEFTEC 2022! The Lake Erie Sludge Dawgs hailed from the Northeastern Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) and Combined Sewers was a joint effort of the City of Columbus and the Northwestern Water and Sewer District (NWWSD). Both teams practiced and worked very hard, and it paid off, with the Lake Erie Sludge Dawgs placing in both the laboratory and maintenance contests. Jon van Dommelen and Rob Smith Recognized OWEA would like to congratulate Jon van Dommelen and Rob Smith on winning the WEF Gascoigne WWTP Operational Improvement Medal. This medal is awarded to the author(s) of an article which presents the solution of an important and complicated operational problem within a full-scale, operating wastewater treatment plant. Jon is with the Compliance Assistance unit of the Ohio EPA and Rob is with Black & Veatch. WEFTEC Student Design Contest Shows Future of Our Industry is Bright The future of our industry is bright with emerging leaders like the three University of Akron students who represented Ohio at the WEFTEC Student Design Contest last week in New Orleans. The Ohio trio did a comprehensive assessment of the Akron Water Reclamation Facility. OWEA launched our Student Design Competition in 2017, with the winning team traveling to WEFTEC to compete nationally. This competition promotes “real world” design experience for students interested in pursuing a career in water and environmental science. Any Ohio college or university is welcome to participate, and you can find out more about this great opportunity HERE.
