Ohio EPA Cancels Operator Exams

Ohio EPA has canceled the previously postponed May 2020 and the November 2020 paper and pencil examinations at the Ohio EXPO Center due to the following factors:
  • Concern regarding Ohio EPA’s ability to ensure your safety and the safety of Ohio EPA staff;
  • Continuing uncertainty with the COVID-19 crisis and ability to hold large gatherings;
  • Franklin County’s Level 3 Public Health emergency; and
  • Concern with The Ohio Expo Center’s ability to reopen by November.
Ohio EPA is issuing full refunds for the exam fees that have already been paid.
Ohio EPA exams for becoming certified as a professional water or wastewater operator are available through our approved third-party examination provider, the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC).  ABC is administering water and wastewater examinations to very small groups in 9 locations throughout the state.  All applications for examination go directly through ABC’s examination portal.

You can schedule an exam here.

Examinations are given 5-6 days per week (depending on site) and an examination can be taken once every 30 days.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Ohio EPA’s operator certification unit at 1-866-411-OPCT (6728) or opcert@epa.ohio.gov.

OWEA to Honor 2020 Award Winners

OWEA will be doing awards a bit differently this year, due to our conference switching to a virtual format. We are so excited to celebrate our winners’ achievements and will be honoring them in the upcoming Buckeye Bulletin. We will also be honoring them in person at the 2021 One Water Conference slated for July 26-29 in Cincinnati.

EPA Offers COVID-19 Financial Impact Tool

The EPA has released the Water Utility COVID-19 Financial Impact Tool to help drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater (“water”) utilities assess the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their cashflow. This spreadsheet helps in supporting the financial and operational health of water utilities, which plays an integral role in protecting human health and the environment for our nation.

Note that use of the spreadsheet is voluntary, and its results are provided for your information only. EPA is not collecting either the data entered by utilities nor the results.

The tool can be found on EPA’s website here.

We’re BACK! With Masks and Social Distancing

Our in person workshops do look different, but we are so excited to be able to be together, even in a smaller group! Recently, our Collections Workshop was held with plenty of hand sanitizer, masks, and  social distancing. While things looked different, what didn’t change is the great education and networking that occurred. If you are ready and able to resume in person learning, please consider our upcoming November Plant Ops and Lab Workshop or our December Biosolids Workshop.

RCAP to Donate 40,000 N95 Masks to Small Community Water Utilities

The Rural Community Assistance Partnership, Inc. (RCAP) announced it is sourcing and donating 40,000 N95 masks to frontline water operators in partnership with Xylem Watermark and 120Water. The program is providing for the safety of essential water, wastewater and solid waste utility workers in small, rural and tribal utilities who have kept operations flowing in their communities amidst the challenges of COVID-19. The first shipments of face masks began in late July.

Most of the equipment will be sent to water utilities in communities with less than 2,500 residents. RCAP is a national non-profit network that provides resources and support to rural communities across the United States and has deep knowledge of rural water utilities.
